Are There Mental Health Benefits of Having Straight Teeth?

If your teeth are misaligned, you will have probably thought about getting them straightened at some point or another. You may think that straightening your teeth seems like a lot of fuss for something that is purely cosmetic. But having your teeth straightened offers more than just your desired smile. Straight teeth can have a vital role in your overall well-being.

Let’s take a look at how having straight teeth might improve your health.

Improved Self-Esteem

You might not realise how important your teeth are for your self-esteem and mental health.

An experiment done by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentists demonstrated the impact your teeth has on social interactions.

Participants were shown a photo of a person before having their teeth straightened, and one after. They were asked to rate the person based on ten characteristics, ranging from attractiveness to wealth. Without fail, every participant rated the ‘after’ photo higher than the ‘before’ photo.

Your self-confidence may often be shaken by negative interactions with others due to this prejudice. Having a straight smile will prevent this, boosting your self-esteem.

Your Smile

A great smile can help you make friends and allow you to have better health. A ‘smile’ has topped a poll of the most important physical features when it comes to attraction between opposite sexes. A survey carried out on behalf of the British Health Foundation revealed a smile was rated highly, along with faces and eyes. Other bodily features such as dress sense, body shape, hair and height only accounted for 25%.  Smiling has social as well as health benefits. We smile to make others feel at ease around us. It can be used as a powerful emotional tool and has connotations with success, confidence and attraction. Dating website found that singles pay attention to teeth more than anything else when judging a potential partner. Their results showed that 58% of single men and 71% of single women considered teeth to be the most important factor when judging a potential date, ahead of clothes, accents, grammar, cars and shoes.

Smiling has many health benefits such as slowing your heart rate and relaxing your body. A slower heart rate can mean that the heart is not overworking. People who smile and laugh a lot often are less likely to develop heart disease. Smiling can reduce blood pressure for short time periods too. The brain releases chemicals that make you happy and this has been quantified the same as eating 2000 chocolate bars. This is an easy way to be happy without the added calories!

Tooth whitening and straight teeth are just two simple options to improve your smile. Having straight teeth can mean that you are less likely to have broken teeth as the teeth are functioning in harmony. Overlapping teeth collect more food and build more plaque deposits so you are also less at risk from tooth decay and gum problems as you are better able to clean your teeth.

We find that there are no restrictions to having straight teeth. There are various methods of having straight teeth that include clear braces, hidden braces, removable aligners and clear aligners. Our dental team is ready and waiting to see how they can help you get that smile.

In conclusion

“A smile costs nothing, but creates much. It enriches those who receive, without impoverishing those who give. It happens in a flash and the memory of it sometimes lasts forever.”

Dale Carnegie, How to Win Friends and Influence People.
