Dermal Fillers v Anti-wrinkle Injections: What’s Right for You?

Dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections are both easily administered forms of facial aesthetics, but what are the key differences and which one is right for you? Let’s take a look

The fundamental aim of both is the same: small changes that make a big difference. A natural lift should be achieved, leaving you looking refreshed and enhanced but still like you.

Before answering what the difference is between the two treatment types, we should point out that you don’t necessarily need to know. If you visit a Dr Vishal Mohal @ Confidental he will discuss your aims at the initial consultation and will know what the best form of treatment will be to achieve these. Often the treatment you think you may need is not what will provide the best results!

Where can dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections be used?

While the following is not a definitive list of where either treatment can be used, it does help to highlight some subtle differences – subtle differences being what these treatments are all about.

Some common treatment areas for dermal fillers are:
Naso labial folds (nose to mouth grooves)
Marionette lines (mouth to chin lines)
Cheeks (for contouring and rejuvenating sunken cheeks)
Scars and acne marks
Smoker’s lines

And for anti-wrinkle/ageing injections:
Frown lines
Crow’s feet (around the eyes)
Bunny nose
Smoker’s lines
Chin pebbling

You will notice that smoker’s lines appear in both, this is where the skill and experience of the clinician is key, knowing which is the right treatment given the exact nature of the lines.

Be cautious of treatments administered from non-medical or trained professionals as you will certainly not get this extra care and level of expertise. Dermal fillers can be used to fill in deep facial lines and even reshape features by gently smoothing and sculpting from within. Anti-wrinkle injections are commonly used on the forehead and around the eyes and mouth, including helping to counter the effects of a gummy smile.

How do these facial rejuvenation treatments work?

Dermal fillers work by restoring the levels of a naturally occurring substance in the body. All of us see our levels of hyaluronic acid diminish as we age and this affects the formation of collagen. Boosting the amount of hyaluronic acid in specific areas through skilled application helps to re-volumise and rejuvenate the skin.

The purpose of hyaluronic acid is to deliver nutrients to the skin, hydrate it and act as a cushioning agent to lift any folds. As it is lost from the deep skin layers known as the dermis (hence the term dermal fillers), signs of ageing appear.

The synthetic replacement addresses this by replicating the effect of the hyaluronic acid to add volume to facial tissue and create a smoother look. The effects are natural-looking and long-lasting

Anti – Wrinkle

Anti-wrinkle injections work as the name implies, injections applied with pinpoint accuracy to areas of the face to relax the skin and literally wipe away the stresses that appear as lines and wrinkles.

The injections of botulinum toxin block the signals from nerves to the tiny underlying muscles that contribute to wrinkles. Given that the injections are targeting nerves this highlights another reason why you would need a true, trained, expert to be administering the treatment, not someone with minimal training or no training. Botulinum toxin is a naturally occurring protein. A purified form has been used in medicine for more than 20 years to help people with painful muscle contractions and spasms. Cosmetically it is most effective when used in the upper third of the face. This is a prescription-only medicine, again emphasising how all aspects of facial aesthetics require true expert administration.

How long do the treatments last?

Anti-wrinkle injections last for between three to five months in most cases, dissolving naturally over time. Dermal fillers are longer lasting and can last for up to nine months. There is also a slight difference with how soon you will see the effects of the treatment. The results of dermal fillers are instantaneous, while anti-wrinkle injections take a couple of days for the effects to come through.

What are the side effects of dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections?

When professionally applied following a consultation, the side effects should be minimal at most.  Temporary injection site reactions such as redness, pain or tenderness, bruising or discoloration may occur. These are countered with arnica cream and sterile makeup following your appointment. You will also be advised of any potential side effects during your consultation – the aim of the consultation is to help you make an informed decision rather than force you into treatment.

Arrange Your Facial Aesthetics Consultation

However much reading you do, you perhaps still won’t be certain exactly what type of treatment you require and you certainly won’t be able to administer it confidently.

The next step if you are keen to utilise facial aesthetics to give your appearance a subtle boost, or even if you are simply curious, should be to arrange a consultation.

Our clinicians at Confidental are Vishal Mohal and Bali Dhaliwal – you can read more about them here. Vishal and Bali are both passionate about facial rejuvenation and aesthetics and their positioning at the crossroads between science and beauty.
