What is Anti- wrinkle Treatment?
Anti-wrinkle treatment is whereby a variant of the neurotoxin BOTOX© (an FDA approved treatment) is injected in to various muscles to restrict or limit movement. The toxin interferes with the nerve impulses that create wrinkles through repeated use. When these impulses are blocked and the signal to fire from the brain is not received and hence the muscles do not move and the wrinkles do not occur.
Anti-Wrinkle treatment has been widely used to treat wrinkles on the forehead and face, crow’s feet, frown lines and other fine lines that are the result of repeated movements in the face and aging. Many patients choose to undertake anti-wrinkle treatments regularly to maintain the softening of fine lines, and wrinkles on the face. Healthy patients who respond well to Botox may be able to receive treatments every 3 to 4 months.
Anti-Wrinkle treatments are quick and easy. After your doctor has determined that you are a good candidate for anti-wrinkle treatment they will ask questions and examine your facial structure and the muscles that cause wrinkles and other problem areas. Your doctor will administer a series of a few tiny injections directly to the affected muscles. Most patients find the injections to be easily tolerable and ice or anesthetic cream to numb the area prior to treatment for patients who are worried about discomfort.
The entire treatment usually finished in about 10 minutes and patients will see the treatments begin to take effect in 10-14 days. Patients may notice continued improvement for up to 30 days following treatment and these improvements typically stay with patients for up to 3-4 months, but results will vary depending on each patient’s body chemistry. Anti-Wrinkle treatment require no down time and you can continue with your day without side effects or any need to rest.
The effects of anti-wrinkle treatment are usually confined to the injected region; it does not travel throughout the body. In addition to using anti-wrinkle treatment for wrinkles in the forehead, eyebrows and crow’s feet, other less common areas can be injected too such as ones listed below.
Upper lip lines
Downturn corners of lips
“Bunny” nose lines
Lower eyelid wrinkles
Neck creases and wrinkles
Hyperhydrosis (sweating palms and arm pits)
When should you start to have Anti-Wrinkle Treatment?
Preventative anti-wrinkle treatment has started out since Botox was initially released, and yet the answer is shrouded in confusion as to whether you can halt furrowed brows and crow’s-feet before they’ve actually happened.
The idea of using Anti-Wrinkle treatment to prevent wrinkles for occurring makes sense, as if you can restrict or limit the movement of the muscles causing the wrinkles, then eventually you may not get wrinkles in the first place. Is there any truth to this theory and if so how soon can you start?
The answer to this is not black and white, instead Dr. Vishal Mohal believes taking proactive efforts early can reduce the need for invasive procedures later. If you have finely etched lines even when you are relaxed then anti-wrinkle treatment is for you.
At Confidental there are a fair few enquires on this topic and Dr. Vishal agrees the administration of anti-wrinkle treatment at early signs of visible wrinkles can reduce wrinkles in the future and the dose and frequency of the neurotoxin is lower if you start using it early. However starting too early is to be avoided. If you have no fine lines at rest and you would like to have anti-wrinkle treatment this is presumptive that you may get wrinkles and hence no preventative.
A youthful face is one that moves and one that can express emotions. A stiff forehead or an expressionless smile can make you look older faster. Anti-Wrinkle treatment when placed in the correct areas can help to reduce habitual tendencies and sometime even break habits that could lead to worsening of wrinkles. Dr. Vishal prefers to send away patients who prematurely request anti-wrinkle treatment with a prescription of peptide creams for day, retinols at night, and a friendly dose of perspective.Back to Blog
