How does teeth whitening work?
So we all know the benefits of teeth whitening – not least of which is brightening the smile for a more attractive appearance and enhanced self-esteem. But how does it actually work?
The process itself is simple enough. The specially devised products contain an active bleaching agent – we use Enlighten, the world’s best performing whitening treatment which contains 16% Carbamide Peroxide. This agent passes through the dental enamel (top layer of the tooth) and breaks down stains into smaller pieces, making the discolouration less concentrated and brightening the teeth.
Following a consultation with a dental professional and an assessment to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy, your dentist or dental therapist will take an impression of your mouth. (Where oral health is not optimal, you may need to see the hygienist who will support you in improving the health of your mouth ready for whitening treatment.)
The impression is used to produce an exact mould, from which a set of sealed whitening trays are fabricated in the dental laboratory. The number of trays provided will depend on how long you need to undergo treatment in order to achieve the shade you desire. You will also be supplied with whitening gel in syringes and photographs will be taken of your smile from different angles.
The dental professional will then show you how to apply the gel to the whitening trays, which is simple to do. From here, you will be ready to take your whitening kit home, where you will have been instructed when and for how long to wear the whitening trays (this is often overnight for two weeks). You will likely have a review appointment booked with the dental professional so they can double check everything is OK and that treatment is commencing as expected.
The entire process is usually pain-free, but it is not uncommon to experience some tooth sensitivity. When this occurs, you will have some sensitive swabs containing a special solution – these can be used to target any uncomfortable areas and alleviate symptoms. The final treatment will be provided in the practice to ensure a good even coverage.
The colour usually needs a week or two to settle properly, and then you can see the full effect of treatment. The results can last a lifetime if your teeth and gums are looked after properly and the recommended maintenance plan and top-up treatments are utilised. Wearing a new tray for a night every couple of months will help you keep up appearances without a problem, and brushing with the Enlighten Tooth Serum will further prolong great results.
