Are digital scanners the future of Dentistry?

Thirty years ago, dentistry looked very different. Our dentists and hygienists trained using traditional methods such as analogue impressions, film-based X-rays, and paper records—approaches that, while effective at the time, often came with limitations. Some of you may even remember the distinctive taste of dental impressions.
Over our professional career, Confidental has transitioned to embrace digital changes, helping to deliver exceptional care. Computerised records now allow for automated patient reminders, online bookings and accurate record keeping. Digital X-rays mean lower radiation dose (roughly around one tenth of film-based doses), immediate processing with magnification or email to referral without the need to post. Digital scanners mark the biggest forward leap, where we now scan, digitally plan and print dentures, crowns or bridges and implants to offer precise customised treatments or in the case of orthodontics (braces) we can move teeth faster and more accurately.
How do the scanners work?
Digital scanners use a small, handheld camera to gently capture a detailed 3D image of your teeth and gums. As the scanner moves around your mouth, it builds a precise digital model in real time on a screen in a similar way that Google maps scans roads, allowing both you and the clinician to see the results instantly. The computer stitches these individual images to make a 3D model. This process is quick, comfortable, and avoids the need for traditional impression materials, while providing highly accurate information to help plan and deliver your treatment with greater precision.
What scanners does Confidental have?
We currently have four scanners, one used for our implants, two used for crowns and bridges and one for brace treatment which links directly with Invisalign. Each scanner is set for a different workflow and accuracy, with the highest accuracy for the implant and crown-and-bridge systems. We also have two printers, which allow us to print 3D plastic models and porcelain crowns on site. We plan to expand the range of printable material with renewed investment, allowing us to deliver faster returns with just as much accuracy.
