Dental implants are a long term solution for one or more missing teeth. They are made up of an artificial titanium root, placed directly into the jawbone by your dentist. An extension is fitted to the top of the implant which provides a strong foundation to support crowns, bridges or implant dentures.
Dental implants look and feel just like natural teeth and are an ideal option if you are concerned about replacement teeth coming loose. They also safeguard your overall dental health. It’s very important to replace missing teeth, because when you lose a tooth it can cause bone loss that in turn can age your face and lead to adjacent teeth becoming loose or drifting out of alignment.
At Confidental, we’ve seen first-hand how a dental implant can really help restore confidence and bring back a smile.
A single dental implant from Confidental in Sandhurst is a secure replacement for a missing tooth, giving you the peace of mind that you can eat and smile with confidence. You’ll forget the tooth isn’t your own.
A single titanium implant is placed into the jaw to replace the root. Once fitted, the implant will usually need 3 – 6 months to heal and bed into the jawbone, providing a stable base.
At this stage, a temporary crown is usually fitted, which will stay in place until your dentist completes the treatment and matches the colour of your crown to your natural teeth.
An option for patients who have lost a number of teeth in a row, is to have implant retained bridge or dentures fitted. An implant is placed into the jawbone at either end of the gap and a dental bridge or denture is used to bridge the gap. Thanks to the retaining implants, the teeth are more securely attached and less likely to slip or rub against your gums. The dentures can be removed for cleaning just like traditional dentures. Following a period of healing, the new dentures will be fitted. Temporary dentures are used whilst your treatment is taking place.
If you’re considering dental implants, why not take a look at the answers to the questions we are regularly asked by our patients.
1. Can anyone have implants?
Dental implants are suitable for most adults who are in good health and have healthy gums. They are not suitable for children and young people under the age of 18 as their bones are still growing.
There are a few scenarios where your dentist may not recommend implants:-
If you have any medical problems, do have a chat with us and we can let you know if dental implants will be suitable for you.
2. I’m a bit nervous, will it hurt?
At Confidental we want to make your treatment as pain free as possible, which is why we offer a consultation with our smile advisor before you start. Understanding your worries and concerns allows us to make sure your treatment is as comfortable as possible.
The implants are placed under local anaesthetic. There is usually some minor discomfort for the first few days after the surgery, but normal painkillers are sufficient to cope with this. Most of our patients find having to keep their mouth open for 40 minutes whilst the implants are fitted to be the hardest part of the treatment, rather than pain!
If the thought of dental implants is worrying you, we also offer conscious sedation to help you relax.
3. How long do implants last?
Many people choose dental implants over dentures as they are a more permanent option. Dentures only tend to last for 5 -10 years. Dental implants are a long-term solution that means you don’t really need to think about your teeth. We have patients who have had their implants for over 20 years and as long as they are looked after, they should last a lifetime.
Latest evidence suggests that 95% of dental implants will last for 15 years or more.
4. What are the alternatives to dental implants?
Dentures are an alternative to dental implants but as they are removable, they are not always comfortable. Another alternative is a dental bridge (eg. Maryland bridge, Rochette bridge, cantilever bridge or a fixed bridge), which needs to be supported on adjacent teeth.
5. How much do implants cost?
The cost of treatment varies depending on the number of implants you’re having and the complexity of the treatment. Once we’ve established your treatment plan, we can give you an indication of the cost of treatment.
It’s worth remembering that implants are a long term solution so whilst the cost is likely to be higher than alternative treatment options, the benefits of dental implants will last a lot longer.
At Confidental, we also offer payment plans to help spread the cost of your dental implant treatment.
