What does root canal treatment involve?
On your first visit, a full consultation and dental examination will be carried out, along with appropriate x-rays. This helps us make an accurate assessment and diagnosis and provide you with the most appropriate advice regarding your tooth. We will then explain and discuss our findings, treatment options and costs with you. Treatment is not usually carried out at this visit.
On the day of treatment, the infected dental pulp is removed and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and sealed. A rubber sheet (rubber dam) is routinely used throughout the procedure to isolate the tooth and help disinfect it thoroughly. This treatment is usually carried out with the use of a microscope and under local anaesthetic.
Special tiny instruments are used to shape the root canals before they are washed again to remove any lasting debris. They are then filled with a rubber compound material to seal the tooth and prevent any bacteria from entering and causing further infection.
The treated root canal is sealed with a permanent filling. In some cases, we may need to use a crown to help restore tooth shape and functionality for a natural looking finish.
