Eliminate tooth pain and infection

Root canal treatment, or endodontics, involves removing infected pulp from tissues from the innermost part of the tooth. The treatment is typically very successful at saving your natural tooth and clearing infection from your mouth. Despite the rumours, root canal treatment is pain-free and can bring great relief from persistent toothache. Why do I need root canal treatment?

The dental pulp at the centre of your tooth is made up of soft tissue and nerves. If this pulp becomes infected and is not effectively treated, it can become very painful and needs to be removed to prevent the issue from spreading.

Infection can start for several reasons, including tooth decay, trauma, cracks or chips in teeth, and repeated extensive dental work such as deep fillings. Symptoms of infection may include swelling, pain, sensitivity to hot and cold, discolouration and tender gums. Root canal treatment aims to stop your pain, remove the infection and prevent it from happening again.

What are the benefits of root canal treatment?

  • Can save an infected tooth from extraction
  • Removes a source of infection that could spread to other areas
  • Prevents further problems that could be caused by losing a tooth
  • Relieves pain and toothache
  • Less expensive than replacing a lost tooth

What does root canal treatment involve?

On your first visit, a full consultation and dental examination will be carried out, along with appropriate x-rays. This helps us make an accurate assessment and diagnosis and provide you with the most appropriate advice regarding your tooth. We will then explain and discuss our findings, treatment options and costs with you. Treatment is not usually carried out at this visit.

On the day of treatment, the infected dental pulp is removed and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and sealed. A rubber sheet (rubber dam) is routinely used throughout the procedure to isolate the tooth and help disinfect it thoroughly. This treatment is usually carried out with the use of a microscope and under local anaesthetic.

Special tiny instruments are used to shape the root canals before they are washed again to remove any lasting debris. They are then filled with a rubber compound material to seal the tooth and prevent any bacteria from entering and causing further infection.

The treated root canal is sealed with a permanent filling. In some cases, we may need to use a crown to help restore tooth shape and functionality for a natural looking finish.

Frequently asked questions

Is root canal treatment always successful?

Root canal treatment is successful in around 90% of cases. If your tooth is not suitable for root canal treatment or the chance of success is unfavourable, you will be informed at the time of consultation or during the treatment.

What are the alternatives to root canal treatment?

The only alternative to root canal treatment is often removal of the tooth. Once the nerve dies, it can’t heal, and it is not recommended to leave an infected tooth in the mouth. We try to avoid extraction, as it is usually advised to keep as many natural teeth as possible. If extraction is inevitable, we can give you multiple options for replacing the lost tooth, including with an implant, bridge or partial denture.

I’m nervous about root canal treatment - can you help?

At Confidental, we understand that the words ‘root canal treatment’ can cause anxiety and fear for many people. Our dentists are dedicated to ensuring your root canal treatment does not cause you discomfort and is as stress free as possible.

Does root canal treatment hurt?

Root canal treatment has a reputation for causing pain, but if done properly, this should never be the case. There have been great innovations in the last few years to improve the comfort, speed and efficiency of endodontic treatment. It is carried out under local anaesthetic, so it should be no more uncomfortable than having a normal filling. You will likely feel great relief once you are no longer in pain from the infection!

How much does root canal treatment cost?

The costs associated with root canal treatment can vary depending on factors such as the severity of damage to the affected tooth and the location of the tooth in your mouth. In general, endodontic treatment is much less expensive than tooth removal and replacement with an artificial tooth. We always provide you with a cost estimate before treatment begins.

It is rare for patients to experience complications after root canal treatment. However, if a problem does occur, you should contact us immediately so that we can help. To prevent further dental decay and to ensure good dental health, keep up with regular check-ups and hygiene visits. How long will my root treated tooth last?

If it is properly cared for, your root treated tooth should function well for many years and cause no issues. In some cases, the treatment may need to be repeated, but this is rare.

How do I look after my tooth following endodontic treatment?

Root-treated teeth should be treated just the same as any other tooth. Remember to clean your teeth at least twice a day, preferably with a fluoride toothpaste. Cut down on sugary snacks and keep them only to mealtimes if possible. It is also important to visit your dentist for regular check-ups.
