Your dental hygiene treatment steps

Step 1: Discussion

We begin your dental hygiene treatment by asking you how your teeth and gums have been since your last visit, and if you have any concerns. We also ask a little about your oral hygiene routine at home and if you are feeling fit and well.

Step 2: Examination

We examine your mouth, looking for any signs of gum disease or decay. Even if this is in the early stages, we can stop it in its tracks and prevent future problems. If needed, we explain the Airflow treatment process to you.

Step 3: Airflow treatment

We use innovative Airflow treatment to give your mouth a comprehensive professional clean. Using the Airflow system, we project a jet of warm water, compressed air and bicarbonate onto your teeth, removing plaque build-up and stains. The treatment is non-invasive and pain-free, producing incredible results in under 30 minutes.

Step 4: Advice

At the end of your appointment, we give you some personalised advice to help you keep your teeth and gums healthy at home. This includes diet tips, showing you how to use tools such as interdental brushes and giving you the motivation to maintain impeccable oral health.

Frequently asked questions

How often do you recommend dental hygiene appointments?

We recommend that most patients have a hygienist appointment twice a year to ensure their oral health is in the best condition. However, this can vary depending on your individual oral health needs. If you have active gum disease or other dental issues, we may ask you to make appointments every 3-4 months to get this under control. Please ask your hygienist for more information.

What is the role of a dental hygienist?

Dental hygienists are specially trained to work with dentists to provide comprehensive dental care. They are mainly concerned with helping patients achieve and maintain excellent oral health through tailored treatment. Dental hygienists also play a large part in health promotion, helping patients feel informed and motivated to look after their teeth and gums.

What is hygiene therapy?

Hygiene therapy is designed to prevent gum disease, improve oral health, and reduce the risk of developing several serious medical conditions linked with gum disease. Our high quality dental hygiene services help you keep your mouth free from decay and feeling healthy and fresh.

Does hygiene treatment hurt?

Unlike a traditional scale and polish treatment that uses dental tools to remove plaque and may cause some discomfort, Airflow is completely pain-free. It is ideal for patients with sensitive teeth and can be used even if you have braces or dental restorations fitted.

How long does Airflow treatment take?

Airflow treatment is typically completed in under 30 minutes.

How does Airflow clean my teeth?

Airflow gently and effectively removes plaque build ups and stains using a powerful jet of water, air and fine particles. It can access even hard-to-reach areas of your mouth and avoids the need for manual scaling. Airflow can also help reduce the sensitivity of your teeth due to the bicarbonate in the jet, which can help remineralise your teeth.

What is gum disease?

If plaque builds up around the teeth and gum line, the gum tissues can become inflamed. The irritated gums often bleed while brushing, making them susceptible to the bacteria in the mouth. Swollen, red gums are often one of the first signs of the early stage of gum disease, known as gingivitis. Other symptoms include tooth sensitivity and bad breath. If left untreated, this gingivitis can progress to a more severe form of the condition, periodontitis. This isn’t reversible but is manageable with effective treatment.
