Why choose lingual braces?

Lingual braces are an ideal treatment in cases where speed and appearance are essential. You can enjoy a confidence boost even throughout treatment as you notice your teeth gradually changing position and edging ever-closer to your dream results. As they are hidden, lingual braces also eliminate the risk of visible marks on your teeth which can occur with traditional fixed braces.

Lingual braces are suitable for adults and teenagers, and are custom-made to ensure optimal comfort and precise results. They can be used to correct a wide range of orthodontic issues, including crowding, misalignment, gaps, and bite problems.

What does the treatment involve?

At your initial consultation, we assess your teeth and gums and make sure you are suitable for lingual braces. We explain the treatment process and discuss your smile goals. We also give you the chance to ask us any questions you may have.

We take digital images and impressions of your teeth, which are used to create your custom braces. They are made specifically for your teeth to ensure a precise fit and the best possible results.

When your braces are ready, we carefully bond the brackets to the back surface of your teeth using strong dental adhesive. The wire is then shaped and threaded through the brackets to begin your treatment. We see you for regular appointments throughout your treatment, to make adjustments to your braces and make sure everything is on track.

When your treatment is complete, we make sure you are happy with your results and remove the brackets and wire from your teeth. To finish, we give you a retainer to keep your teeth in their new positions for the long term.

Frequently asked questions

How do lingual braces work?

Lingual braces work in much the same way as traditional fixed braces, just hidden behind your teeth for virtually invisible treatment. Brackets are bonded to the back surface of your teeth, with a wire connecting them. The wire exerts gentle pressure to gradually move your teeth into straighter positions.

Will lingual braces hurt?

Fitting your lingual braces is completely pain-free, and you will remain comfortable throughout. It is normal to experience some discomfort for the first few days after fitting, and each time your braces are adjusted, as you get used to your braces. This is temporary, and will fade. We provide you with a special comfort guard to wear over your brace to protect your tongue from irritation for the first couple of weeks.

Can I eat normally with lingual braces?

You might want to stick to a softer diet for a few days as you may initially find it difficult to eat, but can introduce harder items as you get used to your brace. It’s best to avoid very hard, sticky, and chewy foods that could damage the brackets. We will provide specific dietary guidelines for your individual case.

How long does lingual brace treatment take?

Treatment time varies depending on the complexity of your case, but it typically ranges from 18 to 36 months. We give you a more exact time frame after your initial consultation.

How do I clean my lingual braces?

Cleaning lingual braces requires extra care. It is important to brush at least twice a day and clean in between your teeth and brackets. We are happy to give you tips and advice, including the best way to use special tools like interdental brushes.

Will my speech be affected?

Yes, for the first few weeks your speech may be slightly affected as your tongue adjusts to the braces. This is temporary, and most people return to normal speech very quickly.
