What are implant-secured dentures?
Implant-secured dentures, also known as implant-retained or implant-supported dentures, are a modern solution for replacing missing teeth. Unlike traditional dentures that rest on your gums, these dentures are securely attached to dental implants that are surgically placed in your jawbone. This creates a much more stable and comfortable fit, revolutionising how you can eat, speak, and smile.
The process begins with the placement of a few small titanium implants into your jaw. These implants act as artificial tooth roots. Once the implants have fused with your bone (a process called osseointegration), your custom-made denture is then attached to them using special connectors. This simple yet effective connection is what holds your new teeth firmly in place.
At Confidental, we offer single dental implants, multiple implants for several missing teeth, All on 4 for a full mouth restoration, and implant-retained dentures in Sandhurst. A consultation with us can help determine if you’re a good candidate and discuss the best treatment plan for your specific needs.
Our finance options, arranged via Chrysalis, can give you the chance to spread the cost of your dental implants over monthly payments, subject to status. Please get in touch with our friendly team for more information.
Dr Sandeep Mohal has a special interest in implant dentistry and has undertaken extensive postgraduate training to further his dental implant skills and knowledge. He has carried out well over a thousand implant cases and puts his patients at ease with his friendly and approachable manner.
To begin your dental implants treatment, we see you for a comprehensive consultation. We make sure you are suitable for treatment and may take digital x-rays to determine the best placement for the implants. We explain the treatment process with you and ensure you are happy to continue.
Step 2: Planning
We use innovative digital technology to create your treatment plan and work out the optimum positions for your implants.
Step 3: Implant placement
We place your implant into your jaw during a relatively short appointment in our practice. We make sure you are feeling relaxed and use a local anaesthetic to numb the area, so you won’t feel any pain. After your implant surgery, a healing time of around 3-6 months is needed to ensure the implant is properly integrated with your bone.
Step 4: Your new smile!
We take a digital scan of your mouth so your denture can be custom-made to your exact specifications. Once healed, the denture will be attached to the implants using special connectors, ensuring a secure and comfortable fit.
The entire process can vary depending on your individual needs and healing time. Implant placement typically takes 1-2 visits, followed by a healing period of several months. Once healed, denture creation and fitting can be completed in a few appointments.
Yes! Implant-retained dentures are designed to mimic natural teeth as closely as possible. The secure fit prevents slipping and irritation, allowing you to speak, chew, and smile with confidence. It may take some time to adjust to the new sensation, but most patients find them very comfortable and say they feel natural.
With proper care, implant-retained dentures can last for many years, even a lifetime for some patients. The titanium implants themselves are very durable, and the dentures themselves can be relined or replaced as needed.
The upfront cost of implant-retained dentures is typically higher than traditional dentures. However, they offer significant long-term benefits in terms of stability, comfort, and improved oral health. Additionally, traditional dentures may need to be replaced more frequently, adding to the overall cost over time.
Generally, patients with good overall health and sufficient jawbone density are good candidates for implant-retained dentures. During a consultation, we can assess your individual situation and determine if this is the right option for you.
The main difference lies in how they are secured. Traditional dentures rely on suction and adhesives to stay in place, which can lead to slipping, discomfort, and a limited diet. Implant-retained dentures, however, are securely attached to dental implants that are placed in your jawbone. This provides a stable and reliable foundation, giving you the confidence to eat, speak, and smile without worry, while also helping to preserve your jawbone health.
